The theme for the month is “sultry”. Apparently we all had a little something something to get off our chests. Our bosoms. Our heaving bosoms. Our throbbing pens . . .

See? We’re completely incorrigible this month.

I clicked over to the online guest book – the one that this officer’s widow would read, would probably print out for their four year old son to read someday. Top of the screen said, “Send flowers, the time honored way to show you care.” With a link to something like this

Seriously? Flowers are totally going to help them feel better right? Flowers will make it all better yes? Oh except for no, no they won’t. Especially Gladiolas.

Remember I’m the daughter of a dead mortician – the one who had services with mounds of flowers yet the family had no money to pay for the casket and burial.

I’m the teacher of students who lost their mother when she was murdered – the school sent flowers and then took up donations because the kids had no clothes to wear to the funeral.

I turned to Twitter – because there is ALWAYS that possibility that I’m just a crabby heartless practical bitch and maybe the world really does want flowers.

I asked: Say your favorite person died. Would you rather ppl spend 60 bucks on flowers or on something else? If something else – what? Discuss

The answers from the wise, beautiful people who took the time to answer:

clairnation: donations to your favorite person’s favorite cause. But then, flowers really make me sneeze.

dashoff: Probably something else. I guess a donation to a charity the deceased would have appreciated.

pgoodness: the last funeral I was involved with I sent a food basket… Had muffins, cookies, etc for the family to help thru long days.

krisiallen: @pgoodness last week we did that plus a cooler of soft drinks and bottled water for family to have at gathering.

mbvisor:  My BFF has a plant from when her mom died 11 years ago. It’s name is Linda & she sits by the front door in a large pot.

@mbvisor I have a plant from my friends from when my gma died 5 years ago. I call it Dead Grandma Plant.

mbvisor:  I have my own Dead Nanny Plant. :/

pgoodness:  also, I’d rather food or charity, but wouldn’t want funeral to be completely flower free if that makes sense.

LisaOnTheLoose:  – We donate to person’s fave causes. Figure that person made life brighter for me. It’s a way to pass their “light” on…

RedBeanSidhe:  Depends on what the person was like.

Zoeyjane:  depends on cause of death. Ie. a charitable donation. Or, if it’s a family, say, like meals or housekeeping…

bluebelleinbg:  Food and a care package of things like TP/Paper towels etc. Ppl have a lot of guests in and out of their house.

kzgirl:  I would rather have donations to charity in the name of my loved one.

milliesboys: Donating a book to the local library in their name/memory is a nice alternative.

Tom_Godell: I’d want to support either the deceased’s favorite charity or an organization that fights whatever disease she/he died from.

EWeaver6405: I would want the money spent toward research to cure the illness.. especially for things like Alzheimers and Leukemia.

My Dad once said he wanted yellow roses at his funeral, and he wanted every woman who ever loved him to walk past the casket and lay one yellow rose into it with him. He finally said he was kidding – which I’m not sure he was – but I do have this

I have this single flower from the casket spray, and the memory of my brother, in his suit,  splitting 4 flowers between the 4 of us siblings. The rest of the flowers were left behind to wilt and die on the grave – this one stays with me. My brother still has his hanging upside down from the antlers of a deer head mounted on his wall.  Even if we didn’t have the flowers – we’d have ways to remember our Dad – the flowers didn’t make it all better for us … maybe for the florists?

I really do love to use what I already have. Yes, I love shopping too, but when it’s harder to find clothes that fit, shopping is less fun. A few weeks ago, I was looking at my usual clothing sites for inspiration, but I just wasn’t attracted to this, which is the hot look for spring.

I can’t get inspired when I’m too busy wondering why everyone is so frakking scrawny.

Finally, my Lane Bryant catalog came and saved me – so many basics – so many women who look like they’ve at least eaten since New Years. I stared at this photo for a good long while -

Then I stared at my closet for a good long while – I pulled out

• wide-leg pants (I have an ass and saddlebags – I wear boot cut to wide leg pants as a rule)
• pink tshirt
• white shapewear tank
• comfortable brown shoes
• necklace and earrings
• beaded indie bracelet

I was out of luck on the scarf – which really is a lot of what makes the outfit. I’d just finished a bunch of yarn that I’d made from a handmade spinning batt so I pulled out the needles and went to work. The scarf isn’t as long as I would like, but I made it work.
